R&D Capital-to-Assets

Weighted sum of the current and four prior years' R&D expenditures, weights declining by 0.2 per year, scaled by total assets, restricted to the smallest third by market cap. Long high minus short low portfolio built as the original paper built it (its sort, weighting and stock screens, as replicated by Open Source Asset Pricing), hedged each month with a rolling 5-year market beta from prior months only (β = 0.26 at the end of the sample). Quarterly, 1983Q3 to 2024Q4.
